What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is one of the easiest and most effective cosmetic dental treatments available. It is very popular with patients wanting to transform the appearance of their smile, or even enhance a single tooth, in a pain-free and non-invasive way. Composite bonding treatment can also be used to repair chipped teeth or small areas of damage.

The composite material is a type of dental resin that bonds directly onto your tooth, meaning none of your natural tooth structure needs to be removed to ensure a successful result. It can be colour matched to your natural shade for a seamless blend, or used in a whiter shade for a more dramatic transformation.

What can I expect from composite bonding treatment?

If you are interested in enhancing your smile with composite bonding, we assess your teeth and gums, making sure they are healthy and suitable for treatment. We talk you through the treatment process and give you the chance to tell us your ideal results.

On the day of your composite bonding treatment, everything takes place in a single appointment. We prepare the surface of your tooth with a carefully formulated gel, creating a rough surface to allow the composite to bond to. The composite material is applied onto your tooth in layers, and we gradually build up the ideal and accurate shape.

When we are happy with the way the composite bonding looks, we use a UV light to harden it into place. It sets immediately, and your tooth is fully functional straight away. To finish your treatment, we give your tooth a professional polish so it looks natural and has a beautiful shine.

Frequently asked questions
1 How do I look after the composite bonding on my tooth?

Your composite bonding is relatively easy to look after. Make sure you keep up with a great oral hygiene routine, including brushing and flossing twice a day, to keep the tooth underneath the composite healthy and problem-free. Visiting your dentist for regular check ups is also important, as they can make sure your mouth is healthy and keep an eye on your composite.

2 Is composite bonding treatment painful?

Composite bonding treatment is completely pain-free. It is non-invasive, with no need to remove any of your natural tooth enamel or structure to ensure a successful result.

3 How long does composite bonding last?

Composite bonding can last for several years without an issue, as long as it is looked after properly. Keep your mouth healthy with effective brushing and flossing to keep your bonding lasting as long as possible. Your dentist may make small adjustments or repairs at your regular check ups, if needed.

4 What is composite?

Composite is a dental resin material, made up of a mix of plastic and glass. It is completely safe and perfectly mimics tooth enamel.

5 Can composite bonding be used on multiple teeth?

Yes, composite bonding can be used on any number of teeth. You may have damage to one or two teeth that need repairing, or would prefer to add composite bonding to all your teeth for a total transformation.

6 What should I do if my composite bonding chips or gets damaged?

If your composite bonding gets chipped or damaged, don’t panic! As the composite bonds to itself as well as your tooth, it is very easy to repair in a single appointment. Your dentist may choose to replace the composite, but this still takes place in one visit.
