Dental implants offer a highly effective, long-lasting way to replace missing teeth and provide a fixed alternative to removable dentures. Implants can improve how you eat and speak, prevent shrinkage of the jawbone, and keep any existing teeth firmly in place.
They consist of small titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone and act just like tooth roots. Titanium is very well-tolerated by the body, so the implants eventually fuse with your bone and provide a solid foundation for crowns or bridgework.
What to expect
- You will have a full assessment of your general and oral health. If you have insufficient bone volume, you may need a simple grafting procedure prior to having implants placed. We provide free implant consultations to all our patients who have had a check-up in the last six months.
- The titanium posts are placed in the bone under a local anaesthetic.
- Over a few months, the implants will gradually bond with the bone.
- Once settled in and fully healed, replacement teeth are fitted to the implants.
Living with implants
Good oral hygiene is essential following the placing of implants to ensure they remain trouble-free. If well looked after, with regular brushing and flossing, they can last for years. You should also attend routine check-ups so your dentist can monitor the condition of your implants and it is a good idea to see the hygienist regularly.
