What are dental implants?

Dental implants offer a highly effective and long-lasting way to replace missing teeth and provide a fixed and very aesthetic alternative to removable dentures. They can improve how you eat and speak, prevent shrinkage of the jawbone and keep any existing teeth firmly in place.

Small yet very strong titanium posts are placed into your jawbone to create a fixed tooth root. Titanium is very well tolerated by the body, so the implants eventually fuse with your bone and provide a solid and durable foundation for a crown or bridge to complete your smile.

What can I expect from dental implant treatment?

If you are interested in dental implants, we begin with an initial consultation. This includes a full assessment of your general and oral health to ensure you are suitable for treatment. We also discuss the implant procedure in detail and give you the chance to ask any questions.

We use state-of-the-art digital scans and images to accurately plan the best positions for your implants. If you have insufficient bone volume, we may suggest you need a simple grafting procedure prior to having your implants placed.

The titanium implants are placed in your jawbone by our skilled dentist, using local anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort. Over the next few months, the implants gradually fuse and bond with the bone.

Once your implants have settled in and fully healed, we fit aesthetic replacement teeth to your implants and reveal your new smile!

Frequently asked questions
1 How do I look after my implants?

Good oral hygiene is essential following the placing of your implants to ensure they remain trouble-free. Treat them just like you would natural teeth and keep up with a regular brushing and flossing routine to ensure your implants last as long as possible.

2 How long do dental implants last?

If they are well looked after, with excellent oral hygiene at home, your dental implants should last for many years, and have the potential to last for the rest of your life. You should make sure you attend routine check-ups so your dentist can monitor the condition of your implants and check you are looking after them effectively. The crown or bridge that the implant supports may need to be replaced over time due to normal wear and tear.

3 Am I suitable for dental implants?

Most people are suitable for dental implants, providing they are in good oral and general health. During your initial consultation, we will discuss your suitability in detail, using x-rays and digital images where necessary to determine the level of bone present in your jaw.

4 Is dental implant treatment painful?

You shouldn’t find dental implant treatment painful. We use local anaesthetic during your implant surgery to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Many patients find it is less painful than having a tooth taken out! After your implants have been placed, you will likely experience some tenderness and discomfort, but this can be managed with painkillers advised by your dentist.

5 Will I find it hard to talk with dental implants?

You may actually find it easier to talk once you have dental implants! Implants create a completely solid and durable foundation for a securely fitted replacement tooth, acting just like a natural tooth root. You shouldn’t have any trouble speaking and may even find you are talking more clearly and confidently once the gap in your teeth has been filled.
